Story

Extracted from my eulogy to mum’s funeral 08/04/2011.

Mum had mostly a good life however for at least the past decade she suffered intense chronic pain.  As a child she had a bad fall, damaging her neck…she was in a coma for weeks.

Around the years that my brother & I were born she nearly died a couple of times in hospital from complications and a miscarriage.  She also survived a botched hysterectomy.

The old neck injury, osteoporosis & rheumatoid arthritis made her recent years a hell on earth.  Nearly every time I saw her in private over the last 2 years she asked me how she could be beyond it all.

With increasing irreparable complications during what was to be her last visit to hospital she decided enough was enough and instructed her doctors, my brother & me that she would have no operations, would not be resuscitated and that all life prolonging activities were to cease.  When the attending doctor confirmed her wishes and advised that she would be kept comfortable she responded with a loud & resounding “good”.

So that is how we come to be here today…mum had finally had enough. The proud, strong & honest woman you all know had made her decision and then stuck with it.

Chronic Pain Australia

Chronic Pain Australia is a voice for the 1 in 3 Australians experiencing chronic pain. Chronic Pain Australia was a lead organisation in the development of the National Pain Strategy. We conducted research through the Pain is Not Invisible Project to determine the needs of Australians in pain and base our programs on these findings. Although chronic pain is common across Australia, we are very concerned about the plight of rural Australians in pain. Chronic Pain Australia wants to help ordinary Australians understand chronic pain so that we can all be a part of the solution and not the problem. Help us strengthen the voice for people in pain. Join our vital online community forum (go to www.chronicpainaustralia.org.au click 'forum').
