Realising a Dream

Story

I am sixty years old, with a wonderful husband and four beautiful children. I have always been involved with my community and have participated in many different fund raising events.  After teaching for 35 years, I took a sea change nine years ago and now work as an Industrial Officer/ Case Manager with the State School Teachers Union of WA.

This is my long service leave break and I with Christine will be realising a dream.

In 2000, I read Nicholas Luard’s book, “The Field of the Star”. His book inspired me to one day complete this walk myself. For the last four years along with my close friend Christine Meyer we have been planning to walk the Camino from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, a distance of around 820kms. We have long service leave from our work and have planned to allow six weeks to complete the walk.

In 2011, my sister Janet McCumiskey died from Ovarian Cancer. This cancer is a silent killer, often diagnosed too late for treatment. Warning signs are often mistaken for other symptoms or ignored.

I am dedicating my walk to Janet and hoping to encourage everyone reading my blog to donate to Ovarian Cancer Research.

Follow the journey, warts and all as Christine and I begin our journey on the 18th September this year.

Be inspired to follow your dreams and prove that you are never too old for anything.
