Cathy Kirk and Red Lipstick Lunch

Story

It’s almost 10 years since we lost our Cath to cancer. Multiple myeloma and the subsequent amyloidosis affecting her heart could never crush her fighting spirit and Cath’s bubbly warm personality was present even on the toughest days. Mother, daughter, wife, sister, friend, lover of life. Everyone who knew her agreed she was a special person and she is missed every day.

To recognise Cathy’s life and the memories she left with us, we held the Red Lipstick Lunch on Saturday 30 November - a special charity event for The Alfred Foundation. Cath received ongoing medical treatment at The Alfred hospital and all the staff were gentle, caring and considerate with her in the most difficult of circumstances.

The Red Lipstick Lunch, honouring Cathy Kirk gave family, friends and members of her community an occasion to celebrate her life and legacy and give back to the institute that did all it could to extend her life and the lives of thousands of Australians.

As a family visiting and caring for Cath while she underwent her treatment, we were struck by the limited options to gather privately or have her accommodated close to the hospital. In the 10 years since her days at The Alfred, some improvements have been made to address this issue. Yet there remains a need for lodging for patients and their families near The Alfred hospital. Many patients find it a financial struggle to travel to hospital and stay nearby. This issue is ever increasing as patients from areas such as Geelong for example, are no longer able to claim any form of financial assistance to help with accommodation.

It is our privilege to mark Cathy's 10th anniversary by raising money in her name and help other cancer patients with accommodation difficulties.  This will also support The Alfred Foundation as they try to relieve some of the burdens that complicate the pathway of cancer sufferers.

For those who were unable to attend the lunch but would still like to remember Cath with a donation, please click the DONATE button above.  All funds go directly The Alfred Foundation and will help support accommodation costs incurred by cancer patients.

Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness in remembering Cathy.
