In Memory of Joan Rodwell
In Memory of Joan Rodwell
Story
Joan Rodwell was born 11th July, 1934 and sadly, peacefully passed away on 9th April, 2020 due to dementia related illnesses. She moved from England to Australia to chase and marry the love of her life, Malcolm. She was a passionate teacher who always enjoyed being with children and lived life to the full. Anyone who has experienced living with a loved one who has dementia knows it is an extremely hard journey. To find ways to ease the burden for others, in lieu of flowers, we ask that you please donate to important research at Dementia Australia.
Dearly adored wife of Malcolm (dec). Devoted and loving mother of Davin (dec), Samantha, Kristina and Janine. Mother-in-law of William and Alan. Proud and loving Nanna to Corbin, Shari, Dayna, Brody, Beth and Abby. As a family, we thank you for your loving donation in memory of our beautiful mother Joan Rodwell. May she rest in peace.
Dementia Australia Research Foundation
Who we are
The Dementia Australia Research Foundation (previously known as the Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation) is the research arm of Dementia Australia. We fund researchers across all stages of their career but maintain a particular focus on supporting Australia’s talented new and early career dementia researchers. We believe science holds the key to ending dementia, so our annual Dementia Grants Program provides funding to support innovative Australian research to:
- Better understand the causes of dementia
- Develop strategies to reduce dementia risk and slow the progression of the disease
- Provide accurate and timely diagnoses
- Improve treatment and care options for people living with dementia
- Find a cure
Why we invest in research
Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and there is no cure. Currently, more than half a million Australians are living with dementia and an estimated 1.6 million Australians are involved in their care. Without a major research breakthrough that can prevent, delay or cure dementia, the number of people with dementia in Australia is set to rise to 1.1 million by 2056, with an estimated cost to the economy of $36.85 billion.
The Dementia Australia Research Foundation believes that research holds the key to caring for people living with dementia today and finding a cure for tomorrow. To give our best and brightest scientists a fighting chance against dementia, we need to maintain a level of funding that allows them to carry out their work. To achieve this, we need your help!
