Dr Maree Gruppetta
Dr Maree Gruppetta
Story
Dear Friend,
I’m fundraising in memory of someone very special, Guyinbaraay woman, Dr Maree Gruppetta. As you may be aware, Maree succumbed to the dreaded disease that is cancer on Saturday 17th August, 2019, one month shy of her 56th birthday. She is survived by her husband Artie, children Jordan, Marissa, and Mason, and grandchildren Magellan, Maridian, Matanzas, Indigo and Scarlett.
Maree was a dedicated teacher and researcher, having worked in primary and secondary schools, and at the University of Western Sydney, University of Newcastle, and Deakin University. She was admired by colleagues and students alike.
If you knew Maree, you know she was a strong, determined woman who had a fierce fighting spirit for social justice, and a wicked sense of humour to boot. She had a strong moral compass and incredible work ethic. Maree genuinely believed in people and was a generous soul. Her sharp, witty mind never failed to amaze the people who knew her.
Maree was passionate about Indigenous research, rights, welfare and education. As such, we think it is very fitting that donations to honour her memory are forwarded directly to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, whose aim is to help close the literacy gap in Indigenous communities and support community literacy projects.
In lieu of flowers being sent to the family or brought to the funeral, it would be much appreciated if a small donation could be made instead to this foundation. Maree would have wanted to help in building a brighter future for Indigenous children and their families.
Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Thank you so much for your support!
Jana
Indigenous Literacy Foundation
Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are much lower than anywhere else in Australia. Our purpose is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books - with a focus on early literacy and first language - but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories.
Please visit our website for more information about our programs.
