Kath Alexander
Kath Alexander
Story
The legacy that Kath/Dread has left behind is that asking for help is ok. Although she was suffering, she did the hardest thing: she made her struggles public and asked for help when she needed it the most. As a result we have seen so many of her friends and acquaintances open up about their mental health problems; in turn, this has helped many people find the help they need, or learn how to help their friends or family. Although Kath was beaten by depression, she has probably saved many lives and will continue to do so as a result of her openness about her struggles.
Since Kath’s passing, many people have asked how they can help out. We think that Kath would really like us to donate to go to the Black Dog Institute. So we have set up this ‘forget-me-not fund’ in Kath’s memory, where donations will be sent directly to the Black Dog Institute.
The Black Dog Institute is the largest research organisation for mental health in Australia, specifically for depression and suicide research. Your donations will help Black Dog continue to do the much needed research into mental illness and find the answers to help people suffering, similarly to Kath, into the future.
The more people that know about Black Dog Institute, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing this page with your friends, family, and work colleagues.

Black Dog Institute
Black Dog Institute
One in five Australians are affected by mental illness each year.
Mental illness can be overwhelming, crippling and isolating.
The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder and suicide.
We are the only mental health facility in Australia that combines clinical services, high quality translational research and education programs. We work to empower communities and help the stigma surrounding mental illness.
The Black Dog Institute has 4 important goals:
to diagnose mental illness accurately and early,
treat them using innovative, effective and accessible strategies,
prevent their onset by understanding why and who they affect
to reduce the overall impact of mental illness and save lives.
Black Dog Institute’s vision is for a mentally healthier world.
A world where the onset of depression and suicide can be prevented and treated. With your help we can make this vision a reality.
