Story
Hello Australian Friends of Nye Hughes,
This is an opportunity to remember someone very special. Nye died far too young, taken by that insidious disease, pancreatic cancer. In Nye's case, as in many others, the cancer was well advanced by the time it was diagnosed, making treatment difficult.
Early detection is imperative in treatment of cancer. Methods to achieve this have been discovered for many other cancers and will only be found for pancreatic cancer by more research. The Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation is an Australian-based charity that supports research into this disease.
Your donation will help this cause and honour the memory of our friend who brought much joy and laughter into our lives.
Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to The Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation which is based in Manly, NSW.
Thanks so much for your support!
Peter and Loreign Randall
Below is an extract from a piece written by Nye's friend, Hywel Ceri Jones, for the Pancreatic Cancer UK fund raising appeal in his memory.
Nye was born in Swansea and educated at Swansea Grammar school. The period he spent as a student at the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth gave Nye every opportunity to develop his many talents. He was a natural and gifted all-rounder, enjoying several sports as well as his academic studies.
Nye had a distinguished career in the European Commission and became well known for his articulate speeches, delivered across the continent, earning him many admirers who enjoyed his oratory and humorous illustrations.
Settling in Oslo on his retirement, Nye enjoyed his retirement with his wife Lisbet to the full, playing golf and travelling.
Diagnosed some 15 months ago with pancreatic cancer, he bore his affliction with dignity and fortitude. The love of Lisbeth gave him great joy and her tender and loving care gave him huge comfort throughout his illness. The visits from his two sons Elis and Sion during his illness also gave him much joy and he would invariably say farewell to them, and to other visiting friends, with his positive ‘thumbs up’.
I know I speak on behalf of Nye’s wide circle of friends across the globe to express our love and deepest sympathy to Lisbeth and her family, to Elis and Sion, to their wives and to Nye’s grandchildren, and to his sister Delyth and her family.
Each and every one of us will have his or her own special memories of Nye. In this important sense he will live on. I shall treasure my many memories of Nye as a positive force within me for the rest of my life.

PanKind Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation Limited
Pankind’s mission is to triple the pancreatic cancer survival rate by 2030 and significantly improve the quality of life for those impacted by the disease.
Together with our partners and community, we’re confronting pancreatic cancer head-on. Making progress a reality through groundbreaking research, compassionate support, and tireless advocacy. Because when the stakes are this high, action isn’t just important—it’s essential and urgent.
Pancreatic cancer is the toughest common cancer, and for too long, progress has lagged behind. Survival rates have barely improved in decades, leaving people diagnosed feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. We’re determined to change this. We are the only Australian organisation solely dedicated to improving outcomes for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
