Carolyn Lister Memorial Scholarship

Story

Carolyn Lister started her nursing in 1992 and had spent most of her nursing career in the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital. She was also a Captain in the Army where she used her nursing skills to help those in need of care. Carolyn and her husband, John were keen travellers and had visited Papua New Guinea in 2002, they realised how poor the healthcare system was.

Tragically, Carolyn passed away on 30th June 2020 from a cycling accident on her way to work in RBWH where she was working as a student facilitator.  In memory of Carolyn the “Carolyn Lister Memorial Scholarship” has been set up to support a Papua New Guinean nursing student through KTF, an Australian NGO working in Papua New Guinea.

Carolyn’s scholarship will leave a lasting legacy, supporting female students to attend St Margaret’s School of Nursing in Popondetta, covering tuition, lodging, resources and uniforms for their studies. The students selected are passionate about serving their communities as health workers, having completed Grade 12 studies specifically to pursue careers as Community Health Workers their local communities. With Carolyn’s army background, it seems particularly fitting that both current scholarship students hail from the remote region of the historic Kokoda Track, where the friendship between Papua New Guinea and Australia was forged during WWII.

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to KTF to facilitate the scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of you, Carolyn's friends and family, our aim is to provide ongoing support for two promising young female students at a time to undertake Community Health Worker studies in PNG.

Thanks so much for helping us honour Carolyn's memory.

KTF (Kokoda Track Foundation)

We're an Aussie NGO that works with people and communities to improve lives, livelihoods and futures of Papua New Guineans, keeping the spirit of Kokoda alive.

Expanding beyond our original focus region of Kokoda in Oro Province, KTF now works with communities across 16 of PNG’s 22 provinces....and we have big plans for 2021 and beyond.

We operate programs in the vital areas of education, health, equality and leadership

Over the past decade, we have delivered a range of projects including the construction of school and aid post infrastructure along and around theKokoda Track, delivery of educational supplies to 20 schools and drugs and medical supplies to 15 aid posts, postings of 15 teachers and over a dozen communityhealth workers, distribution of over 32,000 solar lights across the country, installation of 1,000+ household solar units in the Kokoda catchment, establishment of businesses by Women’s Groups in five provinces and the design and delivery of the Archer Leadership program to find and foster PNG’s future leaders for 10 years.

600+ students currently have a second chance at education, studying Grades 9 to 12 via Flexible Open Distance Education at Kokoda College, Balimo College and the Motu Koita FODE Centre. We have trained 3,685 elementary teachers via our Teach for Tomorrow project and supported the ongoing professional development for teachers via Teach for Tomorrow II, upskilling 220+ teacher trainers. Teach for Tomorrow, the Early Years is developing and implementing Early Childhood Education frameworks in conjunction with provincial Departments of Education.
